Semana Santa "Holy Week"

Updated: Apr 23, 2022

Semana Santa or "Holy Week" runs from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday, April 10th through April 17th this year. It is celebrated by religious processions where huge floats are carried slowly through the streets, preceded and followed by bands and penitents wearing robes, hoods, or other costumes. Some of the floats and statues are hundreds of years old, and there are often multiple processions daily, frequently in the middle of the night. Palm Sunday started with a celebration of Jesus on a donkey. The processions became more somber as the week went on, and Easter Sunday had a beautiful triumphant procession, with rousing band music and fireworks. It was really interesting to see! Sheelah's birthday fell on Maunday Thursday this year, so we watched processions, then had dinner in a restaurant on the beach under the full moon.
